Ukrainian FP-1 suicide drones carry out in-depth strikes against Russian oil refineries over a distance of 2,500 km

Long-range suicide drones are reshaping the rules of modern in-depth offensive and defensive operations. As the Russia-Ukraine conflict continues, low-cost, long-endurance unmanned systems have gradually broken through the traditional range limits of fire strikes and air defense boundaries, emerging as a core means for the weaker side to conduct strategic attrition and target the adversary’s war potential. On July 6, 2026, formations of Ukraine’s FP-1 long-range suicide drones traversed an in-depth distance of 2,500 kilometers, penetrated multiple layers of Russia’s air defense systems, and launched a surprise attack on a large oil refinery in Omsk, Siberia. The strike inflicted heavy damage on Russia’s key crude oil processing hub, setting a record for the farthest operational strike carried out by Ukrainian drones since the outbreak of the conflict.

By breaking through the natural geographic barrier of the Ural Mountains and striking Russia’s energy lifeline in its hinterland, an area long deemed invulnerable by Moscow, this operation has not only verified at the tactical level the operational feasibility of light long-range drones conducting transcontinental raids and penetrating heavy air defense systems, but also signaled at the strategic level the complete collapse of the traditional front-rear defensive framework.

Centered on this case, this paper sorts out the entire course of the operation and analyzes the penetration logic, tactics and winning mechanisms of the equipment. It also summarizes typical tactics of suicide drones and corresponding countermeasures, and puts forward targeted solutions tailored to the characteristics of energy facilities, so as to offer insights and references for relevant readers.
